We gathered to watch the solar eclipse at KLTs offices, also the site of Marble Valley Farm.  We made pinhole viewers, and shared eclipse glasses. 

April 22, 2017

Volunteers met at KLT's office for a quick breakfast before fanning out to complete multiple projects this year!  At our Bull Mountain preserve, we added to a hiking trail.  At Skiff Mountain South, volunteers planted native species to restore the habitat, funded by a grant from Audubon Connecticut for this designated Important Bird Area.  And, Yard Apes of New Milford volunteered a Day of Service towards cleaning up and restoring Beard Farm.  We thank all our volunteers for helping us out on these projects!

On Saturday, October 22, 2016, Kent Boy Scout Troop 11 recognized resident Simon Winter with the highest honor and Award of Eagle Scout. His project enhanced KLT's Audrey and Robert Tobin Preserve in North Kent by adding signage to educate visitors about the history of the property as well as its natural resources, flora, and fauna.

On Saturday, April 9th, Kent Wine and Spirit hosted its 6th Annual Spring Wine Tasting to benefit KLT's land stewardship programs. A sell-out crowd sampled over 50 wines in the festive Kent Barns Gallery, where sculptural elements provided by Kent's R.T. Facts, arrangements by Kent Greenhouse, and delicious refreshments from J.P. Gifford Market & Catering set the scene for relaxed social enjoyment. Ten intrepid hikers braved some of this winter's chilliest conditions on Monday, February 15th to hike the new trail on Bull Mountain Preserve. The spectacular views and hot chocolate at the hike's end proved ample reward!

A festive crowd arrived at the East Kent Hamlet Nature Preserve to celebrate choosing the outdoors over the Mall in connection with REI's national #OptOutside campaign. Marge Smith, Curator at the Kent Historical Society, discussed the Preserve's rich cultural history as we visited sites of prior commercial, farming and Girl Scout activity. All agreed this should become an annual Thanksgiving weekend tradition!

An intrepid group of thirty welcomed fall's first truly chilly morning by exploring the new Homestead Trail in the Audrey and Robert Tobin Preserve. We traveled parts of the old Purple Rim Road through-way, meandered through pine groves and forest habitat, and stopped to explore past structures and measure the circumference of grandfather pines. Bob Tobin led the hike, sharing his vision for future trails.

KLT received the 2015 National Land Trust Excellence Award from the Land Trust Alliance. The award was given for KLT's demonstrated committment to community priorities for conservation, particularly through the recent preservation and opening of the East Kent Hamlet Nature Preserve, the former girl scout Camp Francis. KLT Director Alice Hicks accepted the award in Sacramento at the Opening Dinner of the Land Trust Alliance's annual conference. Honored along with KLT were Chicago's Openlands, which also received an Excellence Award; attorney Steven Small, who received the Kingsbury Browne Conservation Leadership Award & Fellowship; and Alicia Reban of the Nevada Land Trust, who received an Ambassador Award in connection with her advocacy efforts. KLT and the Kent Historical Society welcomed alumni of the Girl Scouts' Camp Francis and others for a reunion tour of the East Kent Hamlet Nature Preserve. Camp lore, songs, and secrets were shared with much laughter as we celebrated the impact of place and nature on wellbeing, no matter what age.

KLT's annual Fall Benefit Party held on Saturday, September 19th was a celebratory success at hosts Laura and Peter Rothschild's gorgeous South Kent home. Nearly 200 supporters enjoyed late summer sunset views, delicious and artfully crafted local foods, and most of all lively conversation with friends. Again this year Honorary Chair Nancy Kissinger welcomed guests and thanked them for supporting KLT. The Fall Benefit is KLT's major fundraising event each year and this year was the most successful yet.

Following a brief field and riverside romp, lucky nighttime hikers at the Robert Avian Preserve were treated to traditional camp songs performed by Kent resident John Baker. The hike was co-sponsored by the Kent Historical Society in connection with its summer exhibit, "The Camps of Kent".

River Smart CT is a collaborative partnership engaging residents and businesses near the Aspetuck, Pomperaug, Naugatuck, Housatonic, and Farmington Rivers in land use practices that can help improve the health of these rivers and their surrounding watersheds. The initiative combines the river and water expertise of partners Housatonic Valley Association, Pomperaug River Watershed Coalition, Rivers Alliance, Lake Waramaug Task Force and the Farmington River Watershed Association with the landowner and community expertise of land trusts including KLT, Steep Rock Association, Warren Land Trust, and Weantinoge Heritage Land Trust.
